Business is a race. Nobody takes part in a race with the intention to lose.
We are entrepreneurs first and foremost. When it comes to running a business, we are way too familiar with the challenges that come with it, we have first-hand experience with the anxiety, sleepless nights and cashflow shortages. We understand the typical business owner is tasked with wearing multiple hats. We discovered very early in our entrepreneurial journey, how difficult it is to start a business on a shoestring budget (all our fault, we took our start-up bootstrap money and went to Disneyland, no regrets)
We also discovered there are Three Types of Entrepreneurs: Those Who Make Things Happen, Those Who Watch Things Happen, and Those Who Wonder What Happened – Anonymous
Digital Marketing Demystified.
Our mandate is to help as many companies as possible to win the race in business.
To help you win, we have compiled a list of basic digital marketing terms.
When I left corporate to start my own business, to motivate myself and keep myself inspired, I used to listen to Les Brown all the time, one of my favourite quotes of his is:
“There are winners, there are losers and there are people who have not yet learned how to win. – Les Brown”
This so resonates with me and I can relate to this. I remember as a kid, I was weak in elementary school, I didn’t know my phonics and my comprehension was weak, so my parents tasked some family members to provide some extra tuition for me, but it wasn’t of the good kind and proved to be savage. Every year they would evaluate our report cards but no suggestion or help was offered on how to improve our grades.
So 30 years later, while listening to Les Brown, it finally struck home, every winner has to be coached. So if you want to win, you have to be taught how to win.
In our experience, we understand that one way to lose customers fast is to confuse them!
Digital marketing has so many moving parts that it can confuse any business owner. That is why most business owners wing it, they adopt ostrich behaviour and choose to delegate that task to the younger more energetic frontline staff. But oftentimes this may prove to be a game of Russian roulette.
Having said that, I love this joke told by Christopher Gardiner in the movie Pursuit of Happiness –
“There was once a drowning man. A boat came by and tried to save him, but he said “no thank you, God will save me.” Another boat tried to save him but he said “no thank you, God will save me” and he drowned. When he got to heaven he said “why didn’t you save me God?” and God said, “I sent you two boats you big dummy!“
The moral of this joke is that there is a myriad of tools at our disposal thrown at us to be successful in our businesses.
It’s our duty to help you keep your head above the water by equipping you with the relevant knowledge so you can make informed decisions in your business and focus on the important things you’re good at.
Give yourself an unfair advantage. All your marketing questions are answered below…
Marketing
The process of getting your product, service or brand in front of your ideal customers. Marketing efforts generate “Leads” for the Sales department to follow up.
Social Media
Social Media is an online community where people interact and share content like photos, videos and more. There are various channels and platforms out there. Because over 50% of the global population is on social media, many businesses use it to grow their enterprises.
Email Marketing
The use of good old fashioned email to communicate with your prospective customers and clients.
Chatbots
Automated conversation robots on websites and apps. The most popular are WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. You can create an automated “chatbot” to answer common questions your visitors may have about your offering.
Leads
Contact information of a potential client, could be a phone number, email, business card or DM. A lead is unqualified. Leads are the life blood of any business that wants to thrive in this modern age of commerce.
Prospect
A lead that has been contacted and may become a possible client. A prospect is a qualified lead.
Opportunity
An opportunity a prospect who is interested in your offering.
Difference between Sales and Marketing
The Marketing department generates the “Leads” for a business and supplies them to the sales division, the sales division’s job is to qualify the leads, to see if they are a suitable fit for the company by moving them from a prospect to an opportunity to close the sale.
Sales Funnel
A step by step process to move people who have shown interest in your offering to become consumers of your offering. Basically, it means most people won’t buy from you, but the onus is upon you to convince them to buy from you.
Facebook Reach
When you do a post, the number of Facebook profiles your post reaches?
Organic Reach vs Paid Reach
Organic is when you make an ordinary post without spending money to reach people on Facebook, on the other hand, if you want to reach more people you must pay, that’s paid reach.
What is an Algorithm?
An Algorithm is the social network’s set of rules to only show your content to those people who would find it meaningful and beneficial. They doný show every post to everyone as it would be information overload and overwhelming.
What is a conversion?
A sale or a download from your website. Could be a form submission on your website.
Social Media is free why should I pay for ads?
Organic or free reach is at an all-time low. In fact, it’s decreasing as we speak. Facebook wants you to pay to reach more people. Less than 5% of your fans see your posts when you upload a new post. Eg: say you have 1000 fans on your business page, only 50 may see your post and you might only get 5 likes. But if you want all 1000 to see your post you need to “BOOST”.
What is the boost button?
It’s a button that allows your post to go to more Facebook & Instagram profiles. You pay Facebook to advertise to more people. It is like throwing petrol in a fire.
I have a Facebook page so I don’t need a website.
Think of social media as a playground, If you want your prospects to take you seriously you need a website. Having a Facebook page only is like meeting your business clients at a recreational park. There is a lot of noise and distraction and at any moment they can change the rules.
What is S.E.O ?
S.E.O. stands for Search Engine Optimisation. S.E.O. is when your webpage appears in the Google search when people are searching for your product or service. S.E.O is also called organic listings. It’s free to come up in the Google organic results.
